Biotin, also known as Vitamin B7 (and formerly as Vitamin H), is a water-soluble nutrient (like all B vitamins). Vital to many chemical reactions within the human body, biotin is required by all organisms — but can be synthesized only by bacteria, yeasts, algae, and a few plant species.
Biotin is found in many foods though generally in lesser amounts than other water-soluble vitamins. There is actually so little data regarding biotin content of food that large national nutrition surveys in the U.S. have been unable to estimate a recommended biotin intake.
